Can Bitcoin be lost when it lives on the blockchain forever? The simple answer is yes. Where does lost crypto go? Lost Bitcoin or crypto doesnt mean that the it's no longer on the blockchain. Lost Bitcoin or crypto means that the coins are inaccessible due to factors like a BTC owner forgetting the password to their cryptocurrency wallet and the coins being sent to the wrong blockchain address during a withdrawal process. Below, we explore how BTC can be lost and whether the loss is permanent.

When is Bitcoin considered lost?

Bitcoin becomes lost when its owner can no longer access it on hardware or software wallet. For Bitcoin stored on hot/software wallets, the loss may be due to forgotten passwords and or security phrases. Bitcoin stored on cold/hardware wallets may be lost due to lost passwords and misplaced wallets.

Maybe a person moved from one house to another and forgot the wallet or maybe they unknowingly threw the wallet in the trash and it ended up in a dumpsite. There are approximately 4 million lost Bitcoins as of August 2024.

Lost Bitcoin: How does it happen?

Lost Bitcoin due to the wrong blockchain or address

Sending Bitcoin to the wrong blockchain happens when a BTC owner chooses the incorrect network on the withdrawal page. For example, you want to send 10 BTC to a friend but when you ask your friend for the deposit address, he gives you an Ethereum address. Sending the 10 BTC to this address makes the coins inaccessible.

Another scenario is when you miss a digit when inputting a deposit address. Since a BTC is made up of up to 62 alphanumeric characters, it is easy to miss a digit in the address. Crypto wallets are now curbing this error by providing a copy function and a QR code to reduce human error.

Bitcoin can also be lost if sent to the wrong Bitcoin address. With the blockchain being decentralized, its nearly impossible to identify the recipient and request a reversal.

Lost Bitcoin due to corrupted and abandoned wallets

In other cases, a Bitcoin wallet may be corrupted meaning that although its owner can access it, it's corrupted and cant display its contents. This is mostly common with hardware wallets.

There are other wallets that users deposited Bitcoin in and have never accessed those wallets. This may be caused by users forgetting their passwords, discarding their computers, or dying. Abandoned Bitcoin wallets can be hardware, software, or crypto exchange wallets.

Is lost Bitcoin lost forever?

Can lost Bitcoin be recovered? Yes and No. Lets explore the No part first. With the birth and maturing of the cryptocurrency sector, there are avenues through which Bitcoin owners can use to recover their digital gold. However, these recovery services arent 100% effective.

Now to the yes bit. Despite having the option to recover lost Bitcoin, there are scenarios when a recovery is impossible. For example, if a Bitcoin owner died without revealing they had some Bitcoin, that Bitcoin would be lost forever.

Another scenario is when a BTC owner loses their hardware wallet in a fire or other means which makes a recovery entirely impossible.

The implications of lost Bitcoin

Lost Bitcoin have an implication on the whole BTC ecosystem. Lost Bitcoins are permanently lost meaning that they are removed from circulation, adding to the deflationary nature of Bitcoin. With 21 million Bitcoins to ever exist, lost BTC reduces the amount. A reduced supply may contribute to a price rise.

Lost BTC also raises security awareness. With more Bitcoins getting into the lost list, its raising awareness to current crypto owners to be careful when storing their passwords and hardware wallets.

The crypto industry is also working to ease access to crypto wallets. Hardware wallet maker, Ledger, for example, has the Security Key app that provides an innovative way to sign in to hardware wallets without using traditional passwords.

The Aptos Connect wallet also allows sign-in using Google ID making it simpler to access blockchain wallets. Generally, blockchain-focused companies are turning to familiar web2 login options to ease access to crypto wallets, bring more people into the blockchain world, and reduce the number of lost cryptocurrencies.

Final remarks

Recovering lost Bitcoin isnt 100% effective and depends on the details a BTC owner remembers about their wallet. Although the amount of lost BTC may reduce going forward as the industry turns to more innovative ways of accessing blockchain wallets, sometimes the loss is unavoidable. To avoid guilt and self-blame use a defined and secure method of storing your wallets and passwords.
