Home & Solo Bitcoin Miners
Home miners are small Bitcoin miners built to run in a house or an apartment instead of a warehouse. The Bitaxe and the NerdQaxe and Nerdoctaxe boards are open-source designs that draw from under 20 W to about 240 W, and Canaan's Avalon Nano, Avalon Mini and Avalon Q are finished home units that reach about 90 TH/s on the Avalon Q. All of them run on household power.
Their hashrate is small next to an industrial ASIC, so on a pool a home miner earns little. A common use is solo mining: the miner works for a whole block reward on its own, a long shot, but solo miners with small machines have found blocks. Every watt a miner uses also turns into heat, which some owners put to use in winter.

Can a home miner make money?
Rarely as income: at a few TH/s, a pool pays very little each day. People buy home miners to learn how mining works, to support the network, to warm a room or to try solo mining for a full block reward. The mining calculator shows what a model earns at your power rate.
What is solo mining?
Solo mining means your miner works on its own block instead of sharing the work with a pool. You get nothing until it finds a block, and then you keep the whole block reward. With a home miner that is unlikely on any given day, so treat it as a lottery ticket that runs on electricity.
How much power and noise should I expect?
Far less than an industrial ASIC. A Bitaxe draws under 20 W, a NerdQaxe about 76 W and a Nerdoctaxe 160 to 240 W, depending on the version. The larger Avalon units use more, about 800 W for the Avalon Mini 3 and about 1,700 W for the Avalon Q, so give those a circuit of their own.
